Every summer, those who live in Westerly, Wickford, Wakefield and other towns along the south coast of Rhode Island know that the warm-weather activities for which the area is famous are plentyful.
Let’s face it, this part of the country is unmistakably a summer destination, and as we move into to the heart of the summer, these events start to kick off.
Summer concerts are frequent throughout this area, and if you’ve got an obsession for live music, you can find an event to attend almost every night of the week. There’s a nice mix of venues, as well, as you can head to a park, check out a concert hall, or even wander the streets of a town to experience local and national performers alike.
Keep an eye out for this summer’s concert series to ensure that you don’t miss out on an event near your new home in Washington County.
Summer Concerts By the Water's Edge Series
Wickford is home to the Summer Concerts By the Water's Edge Series, which takes place at Town Dock every Tuesday. In 2018, the series will run between June 26 and August 7, attracting a variety of bands to the area. Check out the concert schedule to find a few concerts to attend, as this is a free, family-friendly event that is a charming way to spend a weekday evening.
The great thing about this series is that since Wickford is a very walkable town, you'll have plenty of parking options if you can't find a spot at the dock. There are also numerous restaurants nearby, so you can discover somewhere to eat beforehand and turn it into an evening.
The Knickerbocker Music Center
The Knickerbocker Music Center isn't a summer music series, but rather a permanent music venue that you might want to check out at some point. The center, which is located in Westerly, was constructed in 1933 and was first a cafe that was named after a train that passed through the region. Today, you'll find different music events all year round so if you're looking for some live music, this is your place.
Keep an eye on the venue’s schedule to see who is playing when. There are usually shows booked on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, and you’ll need tickets to attend. In addition to the music center, there is a taproom that hosts acoustic nights so that you can enjoy some music with your dinner.
Wakefield RiverFire Summer Series
The 2018 season will be the 4th annual Wakefield RiverFire Summer Series, a weekly concert event that takes place every Thursday on the Saugatucket River. The series will run from June 21 to August 30 this year, with vendors and activities being added to the musical selections. Some nights will have a particular theme, so check the schedule ahead of time to ensure you don't miss out on some of the more popular events.
Although the event is free, organizers do accept donations of non-perishable food items for the Jonnycake Center of Peace Dale. On August 18, there will be a special event called Endless Summer II. On that night, organizers are asking for a $5 donation to support the series.
2018 Summer Concerts at the Gazebo
The Gazebo Summer Concert Series at Narragansett Town Beach is one of the highlights in South County every year, as these concerts are free, family-friendly, and have one of the most beautiful backdrops in the entire country. The performances will be held every Friday between June 15 and September 7 in 2018, and the festivities get started at 6 PM. Make sure you get there early to find a parking spot and to find a place close to the stage.
As a local, you will have the chance to purchase an annual parking pass for Narragansett Town Beach at a discounted price. This pass will come in handy if you plan to attend numerous concerts throughout the summer because you won’t have to search as hard for a spot.
Wickford Harbor Lights
We've already mentioned Wickford once, but for such a small community, it really does have a lot going on. Another event that you'll find in Wickford Village is the Wickford Harbor Lights. This event takes place three times over the course of the summer and involves lighting up the entire town, including the water, with lanterns. There's live music all over town and, best of all, free parking, so make sure you get down to Scenic Route 1A to check it out this summer.
Experience Your Local Music Scene
We’ve only scratched the surface of the local music scene in South County, as there are countless events taking place all summer long in communities all over the area.
If you're thinking of buying a home in Wickford, Wakefield, Narragansett or any of the other oceanfront towns in Rhode Island, you should know that you’ll never run out of things to do, especially in the summer. Music lovers don’t have to worry about not having their fix, as there is a concert to be found almost every night of the week.
