Where to Eat Over Christmas in South County

Since South County is full of small towns and enjoys a more relaxed way of life than nearby Providence and Warwick, you’ll find that most restaurants close early on Christmas Eve and don’t open again until December 26 at the very earliest.

These early closures might be an issue if you don’t have time to cook on Christmas Eve, particularly if you’re expecting company from out of town, or don’t want to dirty your kitchen in anticipation of family arriving early in the morning.

The good news is that although restaurant choices are limited on Christmas Eve, there are a few open through dinner time should you find yourself looking for a meal.

Chair 5

The Break Hotel in Narragansett is home to Chair 5, a trendy, yet casual, restaurant featuring a menu full of locally-sourced, seasonally-inspired dishes, including a raw bar, soups, salads, and seafood entrees. Local craft beers and high-end wines are also available, and you can enjoy views of the ocean or pool while you eat.

The last seating on Christmas Eve at Table 5 will be at 9:30, so even if you get a late start, you'll still have plenty of time to get down there for some great food before they close for the night.

ChopHouse Grille

ChopHouse Grille sits right in the heart of downtown Wakefield, across the street from Wakefield Mall, and offers a diverse menu featuring steak and local seafood. It also has a limited late night menu available after 9:00 PM with appetizers, burgers, sandwiches, and pizza. The central location of the restaurant makes it easily accessible from North Kingstown, South Kingstown, Charlestown, and Narragansett, so no matter where you buy a home in Washington County, you'll have this option available.

The kitchen and bar at ChopHouse Grille are open late, as you can book a table for 11:45 PM. If you have family getting into town at night, this might be an option when looking for a bite to eat or a quick drink before bed.

Trio

About a block from The Towers in the center of Narragansett is Trio, a New England-style restaurant serving pizza, pasta, and, of course, seafood. They also have a holiday gift card promotion where you receive a free $100 gift card when you purchase $500 in gift cards. If you're planning to take some family members out for dinner, it makes sense to head down and pick up a gift card ahead of time to save yourself some money.

The last seating time at Trio is 7:45 on Christmas Eve, leaving you plenty of time to head home and either visit with family or finish wrapping some last-minute presents after your meal.

TwoTen Oyster Bar & Grill

Right on the waterfront in South Kingstown is TwoTen Oyster Bar & Grill, where you can sample New England favorites like fish and chips, oysters, clam chowder, and calamari. In addition, the menu features organic soups, sandwiches, pasta, and seafood, all of which you can enjoy while overlooking Point Judith Pond. Keep in mind, however, that visibility is limited at this time of year, especially at night, so don't expect too much.

The restaurant has seatings up until 9:00 PM, giving you more than enough time to get down there for a bite to eat. If the weather cooperates, this is a pretty area to enjoy a walk along the water or through Marina Park, which is across the street.

Venice Restaurant

Over in Westerly, Venice Restaurant is open from 4:00 until 10:00 PM on Christmas Eve, and will have holiday dinner specials that night. The Italian cuisine at this eatery is very popular with locals, as there is a selection of pizza, pasta, seafood, and salad, in addition to a pub-style menu. While restaurant's location on Shore Road isn't the most scenic, you can enjoy a good meal at an affordable price at Venice Restaurant this Christmas Eve.

The restaurant has a gift certificate program, as well, where you'll receive $5 free for every $25 you spend. If you're looking for a last-minute Christmas gift for someone, give the gift of great Italian food to that special someone.

Weekapaug Inn

Beside Venice Restaurant is the Weekapaug Inn, which also has a Christmas Eve meal that is worth checking out. This dinner is called Feast of the Fishes and involves a family-style seafood spread that you won't forget anytime soon. The meal, which includes a wide variety of local seafood dishes, costs $68 for adults and $34 for children between the ages of four and 12. Kids three and under are free. You can add a wine pairing to your meal for an additional $50.

The dinner runs from 5:00 – 8:00 PM, so you can head down early or late, depending on your plans, for one of the best Christmas Eve meals you'll ever try.

The Weekapaug Inn doesn't stop there, however, as they are one of the only places in South County open for a meal on Christmas Day. Christmas Day Dinner in The Restaurant involves a three-course feast with your choice of beef, lamb, or duck, multiple sides, and a dessert tray.

The dinner is $75 for adults, $35 for kids between four and 12, and free for those three and under. This meal starts at 4:30 and goes until 8:00 PM.

You Don’t Have to Cook on Christmas Eve

There's good news if you don't want to cook on Christmas Eve, as you’ll have some good local options. Even if you work late or have family coming in from out of state who won’t arrive until well into the evening, South County doesn't close entirely until about midnight.

Check out the menus at these restaurants to see if there’s something you and your family would enjoy trying on December 24. Remember that reservations are recommended everywhere to ensure a table is available when you get there.
